Carl Chiarenza earned a PhD from Harvard University for a dissertation on the work of the then living photographer, Aaron Siskind (1905-1991). It was the first such degree in the field of the history of photography. After a number of years of teaching at Boston University he became a member of the Department of Art and Architecture of the University of Rochester. He is now the Fanny Knapp Allen Professor Emeritus of Art History and Artist in Residence. His work is included in numerous public and private collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the George Eastman House, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
He is working on a new book of his work. Other publications include: "Excavations: Carl Chiarenza," Nazareli Press, Tuscon, 2002, "The Peace Warriors of Two Thousand and Three." Nazareli Press, 2004 and "Aaron Siskind" Pleasures and Terrors," Boston, 1982.
