Unser Deutschlandmärchen ( Our German Fairy Tale)

The Turkish boy Dincer (Taner Sahintürk) is compelled to tell his life's experience in Germany when his mother Fatma (Sesede Terziyan) is laid to rest. The story comes alive on the stage of the Gorki Theater in Berlin, Germany that is committed to telling political and socio-cultural stories in Germany. Although the play by Hakan Savas Mican after a novel by Dincer Gücyeter is running since April 2024, the theater is packed to the last seat and there are standing ovations at the end.

Dincer and his mother Fatma are shown in flashbacks told by Dincer, always accompanied by a band of five musicians and singers on stage. It turns into an impressive musical, fabulously sung by Sedede Terziyan with her soulful Turkish songs and Taner Sahintürk similarily impressive by his forceful interpretations of Western music, changing between German and English well known tunes.

It is a story that so many immigrants could tell as well. The family came to find a better life in Germany. The father turns into a drunk and the mother has to support the family by cleaning. Her pride and joy and hope is focused on her son Dincer, never to give up on him until her dying day. He lives in a society that is not really his own, but he has adapted and continues.

It is a catchy performance driven by the songs of mother and son and the beautiful accompany of the band, selected and arranged by Peer Neumann. The fast acting and singing snippets are supported by a glittery stage setting of shiny strings in different colors that descend and be drawn off the stage in rapid movements depending on the ever present musical interludes. What could have been a sad recounting of immigrants vows, it turns into a musical that keeps hope alive and pulls the audience into its orbit.

Congratulations!
