Ole To Winter Gloom
By: Ariel Petrova - Feb 05, 2009
We try to make a point of never missing on of the fabulous "Clark After Dark" parties. They always draw a fun crowd for groovy music, thematic dance and great food. All at a most affordable price. Come kick up your heels and beat the winter blahs into submission.
Embrace that inner gypsy with a seductive evening of
smoldering passion, flavors, music, and dance inspired by the romantic culture of southern Spain during "Clark After Dark: Viva Flamenco" at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. From 8 pm to midnight on Friday, February 20, indulge in tasty tapas as the sangria flows amid the staccato hand clapping, castanets, and music. Admission is $10 ($8 per member) at the door, and you must be 21+ to enter. No costume? No problem. Supplies will be available to fashion tissue paper flowers to wear behind your ear.
Small Planet Dancers, a performing dance troupe based in Westfield, MA, will teach matadors and senoritas basic Flamenco dance movements, the history of the fiery dance, and castanet rhythms, palmas (hand clapping), and zapateado (foot stomping). In addition to leading three workshops, Small Planet Dancers will perform "The Spanish Gentlemen," showcasing the contrasting cultures of a Spaniard, "Gypsy!" performed in a sixteen-yard skirt, and "Firedance," a traditional Flamenco dance.
DJ Tigerbeatz will provide a mix of old and new Spanish/Latin influenced music to create a frenzy of flowing, twirling skirts. Tigerbeatz lives on Martha's Vineyard and is a self-proclaimed "glorified vinyl junkie" who looks at her collecting forays as an ethnomusical archeological dig. DJ Tigerbeatz has a weekly show on WVVY 93.7, Martha's Vineyard Community Radio, and is drawn to international cultures, language and music. In addition to playing on Martha's Vineyard, she has also played in Brooklyn, and at The Enormous Room and The Good Life in Boston.
Snacks with a Spanish flair will include bacalau (salt cod spread), calamari with dipping sauces, Spanish cheeses, Serano style ham, panadons (pastries with roasted peppers, artichokes, olives, chorizo), paella suppli (saffron rice balls with peas, peppers, and seafood), and roast pork and Manchego mini sandwiches.
The cash bar will feature Cava (sparkling wine), Spanish red and white wines, beer, sangria, and dry sherry. Complimentary soft drinks and water will be available.
The evening will also include visits to the Clark's print room. A raffle will be held with prizes provided by Blue Q of Pittsfield, MA. This series of hip happenings takes you around the world and transports you through time with music and dancing, out-of-the-ordinary activities, exotic snacks, and late-night encounters with art.
Don't miss "Clark After Dark: Planet Clark" on March 20.
Grab your space boots and take a quantum leap to Planet Clark for a night of extraterrestrial fun during "Clark After Dark: Planet Clark." Defy gravity and stir up the planets with sounds by DJ Tigerbeatz who will spin a celestial mix of music.
