River Room

River Room
Unique to our loft
The River Room
Poking out
From massive
Brick walls
Where mill workers
Washed up after shifts
Including children
When cotton was king
Legacy of slavery
Looming over artists
Summer meals
Gazing at water fall
From trickle to torrent
Soothing sound
The occasional crane
At its bottom
On spindle legs
Catching fish
Long narrow garden
Next to the sluice
Brilliant fall foliage
Splashed with color
Pretty as a picture
Too cold in winter
Nightly to dine
Semi alfresco
Table piled high
Our pantry
Ersatz root cellar
From huge windows
Mostly gloom
Now and then
Bright sunny day
Looking across
Row of desolate homes
States of disrepair
Formerly Mill workers
Today for an hour
Giant flakes
Big as mothballs
Puffs of cotton
Candy at the fair
Melt in your mouth
Nature's sugar
Sweetening
Slumbering folks
Late February
Longing for spring
