Checkmate

On a cliff
High above the sea
Waves crashing below
The Knight opened
Advancing a pawn
After intensive study
Death countered
Classic strategies
Played for life itself
Each day at dusk
They met in combat
A game of wit
The highest stakes
They opened a rare bottle
Well aged and exotic
Old growth
From the finest vineyard
Carefully decanted
On day one
Elegant, creamy, glycerol
Hidden minerality
Swirled in tall glasses
Exploding aromas
Returned to the board
The Knight attacked
The tannins had settled
Lush ripe cherry flavors
The sun set ending play
Resumed the next day
Becoming more intense
Lavender prevailed
Followed by smoked chorizo
Death was in retreat
Day four approached endgame
Aromas of strawberries and hazelnuts
Ended in a draw
Death vanished in the shade
Inevitably to return
