The last time I saw Morgan Bulkeley was at the 2017 opening of his retrospective at The Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield.  Morgan was part of a group of Boston artists whom I much admired. Link to review.

That’s the only reason why I attended the event at what I have since dubbed The Pariah Museum of Art. It was in the midst of a scandal that drew global attention. Under former director Van Shields the museum was unloading treasures including two paintings given to them by Norman Rockwell.

While found to be legal by then Attormey General, and now governor, Maura Healey, they violated the code of ethics for museums. I swore at the time never again to cross the threshold of the museum.

Morgan has invited me to the opening of a group show this Saturday, March 30, in great Barrington.

Artist Statement

Morgan Bulkeley’s work reflects his concern for nature and the environment. Growing up on Mt. Washington in Massachusetts he grew to appreciate his surroundings through birding and other outdoor activities.

His message delivered through his artwork is that nature is precious, although the political and corporate interests in the world are not necessary interested in protecting it. Through humor he delivers his serious message with the use of cartoons mixed with figures, landscapes, and weapons. “I try to make paintings that are beautiful, frightening and funny all at once, similar to the Theater of the Absurd, which assumes things are so bad that you can only laugh.”

After graduating from Yale art school Morgan moved to Boston where he had a studio for many years before returning to his beloved Mt. Washington home.

Recently his work has been focused on intricately carved maple figurines which are expertly painted with oil paint.
