Night and Day

Night and Day
Quotidian
Measured in increments
Daily routines
Between dawn and dusk
Hesiod got it right
Works and Days
Little has changed
Just a lot more glitzy
The ebb and flow
Now nothing like
Not that long ago
Before global pandemic
Of this there
Can be no doubt
Hardly a hoax
Now home alone
With a loved one
Family hunkered down
Parents out of work
Or remotely on line
Kids getting restless
Missing play dates
Not shooting hoops
Me and Julio
Down at the schoolyard
Playgrounds closed
Along with everything else
Times Square a wasteland
Dry as Arizona
Tumbleweed on Fifth Avenue
Marooned on an island
Robinson Crusoe kept time
Notches on sticks
Counting off days
Stranded Christian
Creating a calendar
Celebrating holidays
Christmas then Easter
His companion rescued
On Friday and so named
That invisible ankle bracelet
Busting one and all
Under house arrest
Eating through our cans
Cleaning out the pantry
What’s left of the freezer
Soon it will be just
Rice and beans
No undocumented
Migrants in the fields
To harvest fresh crops
Brace for famine
From now to whenever
The revolution will
Not be televised
