Cliffhanger
All Along the Watchtower

Cliffhanger
First scene
The Oresteia
Ancient tragedy
High on a cliff
Above crashing waves
Wood piled high nearby
All those years
Others along the line
Far as the eye can see
Connecting dots
Signal fires
Lonely sentinels
Gazing out to sea
First to spot black ships
Back from ten year war
So far away
Home hearths tended
Warmth to comfort warriors
Battered survivors
Legendary men
Endless vigil
Where and when
Gnawing why
Dimmed with time
A nation’s ulcer
Rotting innards
Wives and sisters
Now rarely visit
Surging shore
Yearning for men
Gone long ago
Bent with age
Single mothers
Their dimmed torches
Burning less brightly
Because of that whore
Vile widow maker
