Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Tonys
32 Nominations for Current and Past Artists
By: WTF - Apr 30, 2013
The 2013 Tony Award nominees were announced this morning and 32 members of the Williamstown Theatre Festival family have been nominated - including six that will visit this summer!
Best Direction of a Play nominee Bartlett Sher will reunite his Tony-nominated creative team from Golden Boy - Michael Yeargan (Best Scenic Design of a Play), Donald Holder (Best Lighting Design of a Play), and Catherine Zuber (Best Costume Design of a Play) - for our World Premiere production of The Bridges of Madison County. Nevin Steinberg, Best Sound Design of a Musical nominee for Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella, returns to WTF to design Johnny Baseball.
We're thrilled that former WTF Artistic Director Nicholas Martin has been nominated for his direction of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Nicky will direct Robert Sean Leonard and Heather Lind in Pygmalion this summer on the WTF Main Stage.
We also offer hearty congratulations to our colleagues at Boston's Huntington Theatre Company for their Outstanding Regional Theatre Tony Award. With previous awardees Williamstown Theatre Festival and American Repertory Theater, the Commonwealth is now home to three Tony-honored regional theaters.
And, of course, a giant HURRAH! for Bernard Gersten (father of WTF Artistic Director Jenny Gersten), who will receive a Lifetime Achievement in the Theater Tony Award this year. Jenny's dad is still working - at age 90 - as the Executive Producer of Lincoln Center Theater, an achievement in and of itself.
DID YOU KNOW?
- Christopher Durang's Best Play-nominated Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike had its first public reading as a part of WTF's Fridays@3 series in 2011.
- Best Direction of a Musical nominee Diane Paulus (Pippin) and Best Direction of a Play nominee George C. Wolfe (Lucky Guy) both started their careers as WTF Apprentices.
- Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play nominee Richard Kind is being recognized for his performance as Marcus Hoff in The Big Knife - he played that same role in WTF's 1998 production directed by Joanne Woodward.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE FESTIVAL FAMILY MEMBERS NOMINATED FOR 2013 TONY AWARDS!
