The Pledge
A Poetic Pact

The Pledge
I am in the autumn of life
Got there safe but not sound
Now I look into history past
Searching for forgotten memories
Stashed away
In the darker recesses
Of my crowded unconscious
But time has come for me
To consult with the wizard
The Holy Ghost
In the cave of remembrance
Dare to take a bite out of the cookie
Drink carefully brewed oolong tea
Debate the marginalization of dreams
In gonzo poetry
Use art to capture lost moments
Thus saving them from extinction
Eat tea soaked madeleines
To recapture the essence of my past
History that must be recalled and
Re-examined in excruciating detail …
Feel deeply
The exquisite pleasure of telling the tales
I found my trek
I must travel it
Rowing frothy waters upriver
Toward my own heart of darkness
This I must do
Slay a friend
Embrace a foe
Do whatever it takes
This unholy endeavor is now to begin
Heathens and serpents be gone
Lest I confess my sins to the world
For at journey’s end
I shall be accounted for
