In an urban environment we find ourselves surrounded, yet estranged. Most interpersonal contact we experience, whether virtual or physical, goes unaddressed or is instantly forgotten. Privacy, space, interaction, and intimacy are redefined in the urban sphere, and often defy one's social expectations. Unintentional or unwanted interaction is induced by private acts occurring in public, and by public interaction becoming peripheral. In spite of our stifling proximity to each other, genuine connections may be difficult to come by. The artists in Stand Clear of the Closing Doors are interested in the ways urbanites interact, their work inviting each of us to engage with art, the city, and each other in a new, and challenging, way.
