Colonial Colonial Colonial

It's Springtime for Hitler in Pittsfield. There will be high falootin goose stepping on stage at the Colonial Theatre. Don't be disappointed. Mark your calendar for four nights starting on June 4. Also, get ready for Dickie Betts and Great Southern for a one nighter on May 20.

Years ago I saw the original film of the Mel Brooks film starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. It was an instant cult classic. Later brought to Broadway in the original cast version which I  enjoyed with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. Forget about the movie. What a bummer. There was even a hilarious riff when Larry David played Max in a Hollywood version of the musical. Imagine that. Larry David as Max Bialystock. Oi vey.

Back in the day we heard Dickey Betts perform with the Allman Brothers. It will be a night of  Southern Comfort, if you get the drift, when he blows into town to light up the Berkshires with some mean pickin.

Below are the releases and ticket info from the Colonial.

The Producers

The Colonial with partner with C-R Productions to open its 4th season with Mel Brooks' The Producers on June 4th for four performances. Dates include: June 4 at 7:30PM, June 5th at 8PM and June 6th at 3PM and 8PM. Tickets for the performance are $45-$25 and can be purchased in person at the Colonial Ticket Office at 111 South Street Monday-Friday 10AM-5PM, performance Saturdays 10AM-2PM, by calling (413) 997-4444 or online at www.TheColonialTheatre.org

Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, The Producers once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly "boffo" hit, winning a record twelve Tony® Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night.

The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way irresponsibly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive Springtime For Hitler), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends

Along with being one of the most influential guitar players of all time, Betts is credited as both writing and singing the group's biggest hit, "Ramblin' Man." Having helped define the genre, Dickey Betts & Great Southern continue to tour and break new ground in the grand tradition of great Southern Rock.
