Good Lovelies
Harvard Square's Passim
May 14
On Friday, May 14th Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough and Sue Passmore, better known as The Good Lovelies, will perform for the first time in the Boston metro area appearing as guests of Teddy Goldstein at Passim in Harvard Square, Cambridge.
I have been a fan of the Lovelies since I first heard a recording by them played by Stuart McClean on his CBC Vinyl Café back in 2008. The Vinyl Café is my favorite Canadian radio show and I try to catch it every week via their internet webcast.
Once I had discovered them I tracked down their MySpace page and later became a fan on Facebook, following reports of their travels back and forth across Canada and wondering when they were going to begin appearing in the lower 48.
It was clear in the last 12 months that they were becoming a phenomenon, releasing two CD's last year, winning in quick succession the 2009 New Emerging Artist Award at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and just last month, honored with the 2010 Juno for Roots Album of the Year. Juno's are the Canadian equivalent of our Grammys.
Earlier this year the trio swooped across the south-lands for a few performances, but this month they are favoring the Northeast
Their well crafted original songs fit comfortably into the folk tradition, with strong overtones of western-swing and quirky pop. Their tween song patter is often hilarious and reveals glimpses of the rich and complex dynamic that binds them together. Their harmonies are brilliant, arrangements creative, and instrumental musicianship professional.
You may get the idea here that I am biased. I am. If you can get to see them while they are in the area, do it.
