The Cleveland Museum Under Renovation
A Virtual Tour
The Cleveland Museum was founded in 1916. Under former director Sherman Lee it evolved as one of America’s great collections with strength in American and European art as well as superb holdings in Ancient Egyptian and Asian Art.
The museum is currently under renovation designed by Rafael Vinoly that continues until 2014.
This summer the First Floor of the original building opens with its Egyptian, Asian and African collections.
Currently the museum is displaying a special exhibition of Native American Art from the Thaw Collection of the Fennimore Museum in Cooperstown, New York. We viewed many exquisite works.
Although much of the museum is under construction we spent the best part of a sublime day making many discoveries of world renowned paintings, sculptures and objects.
Among the masterpieces were Picasso’s most important Blue Period painting La Vie, Turner’s the Burning of the House of Parliament, Caravaggio’s Crucifixion of St. Andrew, Ryder’s The Horse Race or Death on a Pale Horse, Twilight in the Wilderness by Church, and The Biglin Brothers Rounding the Stake by Eakins.
Here is a slide show of a selection of masterpieces.
