Some score of years ago the Eclipse Mill was developed as affordable live/ work space for artists. In order to qualify as an owner or renter of the forty lofts an application must demonstrate credentials as an arts professional. Initially that was defined as a visual artist but, with time, that has been more broadly defined.
The current exhibition, Made in the Mill, displays the diversity of work that is created in the vast, former industrial complex. In the 19th Century King Cotton reigned in North Adams. Enormous mills were built for different aspects of the process of converting bales of cotton to cloth. The largest complex of mills, Arnold Printworks, later became Sprague Electric. It and other mills lay dormant when Sprague shut down with North Adams devolved into poverty.
That changed when Sprague Electric morphed into MASS MoCA and redefined North Adams. Artists have become an integral part of this social and economic redevelopment.
The work on view demonstrates how that visionary concept has become a reality.
The current exhibition is part of the county wide celebration of Berkshire Art Week.
