The Portugese people settled in Gloucester to work in its renowned fishing fleet. They have left a rich impact of Iberian heritage on the community.

For authentic traditional cuisine Azorean Restaurant and Bar is a popular destination.

The restaurant, which has always full parking lots, is located next to the railroad stop. As it is not located near the waterfront you must find it by word of mouth . The exterior of the stand alone building has colorful ceramic tiles a decorative motif which continues inside.

We visited on Monday and took advantage of the specials. There are different offerings on other nights.

On this evening it was a choice between several cataplanas. Essentially this is a  pot which arrives with a flip up cover. Inside is a hearty mix of seafood, broth and rice. The lid allows for scooping out servings while keeping hot what remains.

We both opted for the Spanish version ($12.95 on Monday). It was a delicious mélange of  squid, mussels, linguica, shrimp and clams with a trace of rice. The rich broth was perfect for dipping with fresh bread.

For starters we split a warm vegetable salad ($10). It was most generous and even divided it was a portion that most restaurants would serve as a single salad. The greens were fresh and the roasted vegetables were quite delightful.

Our meal was fully satisfying accompanied by an adequate house wine.

Talking with friends they love this restaurant and in particular he recommended the broiled sardines.

The Wednesday special, Portugese Steak Fall River Style, an enticing bargain often sells out.

There is a diverse menu but with its proximity to the ocean we recommend traditional preparations of fish. Other nightly specials feature Tapas Tuesday, octopus stew and chicken parm, on Wednesday in addition to the steak, with prime rib and seafood diablo on Thursday. The Azorean is also known for its gourmet pizza.

When in Gloucester, try it. You'll like it.
