This summer, Art in the Berkshires Gallery + Creative Studio invites visitors to slow down and look closely.

Outside In is a group exhibition inspired by the landscapes, gardens, changing light, and quiet moments that shape life in the Berkshires as the artists see it. Through painting, photography, and other media, regional artists explore not only the beauty of the natural world around us, but the ways those experiences become part of who we are.

The exhibition features the work of Elizabeth Buttler, Diane Firtell, Monica Miller Link, Diane Pearl, and the late photographer Hal Schwartz. Together, these artists offer distinct perspectives on the natural world—from intimate observations of flowers and gardens to evocative landscapes and photographs that capture moments of wonder, memory, and discovery. The exhibition also honors the legacy of the late photographer Hal Schwartz, whose lifelong practice of attentive seeing reminds us that wonder often resides in the moments we choose to notice.

In a season often filled with busy schedules, crowded calendars, and constant distraction, Outside In offers something different: a chance to pause.

Visitors will encounter sweeping landscapes, intimate studies of flowers and natural forms, and works that capture the fleeting qualities of a particular place or moment. Together, they reveal how artists pay attention to the world—and invite us to do the same.

The exhibition's title speaks to a deeper truth. The outside world does not simply exist beyond us. A walk through the woods, the scent of summer rain, the changing colors of a garden, the vastness of a mountain view—these experiences move inward. They calm us, restore us, and remind us what it feels like to be fully present.

"One of the reasons so many of us choose to live in or visit the Berkshires is our connection to the natural world," says Shany Porras, founder and curator of Art in the Berkshires Gallery + Creative Studio. "These artists have paid attention on our behalf. Through their work, they help us rediscover the wonder that exists all around us and the ways it continues to shape our inner lives."

More than an exhibition of landscapes, Outside In is an invitation to reconnect—with nature, with beauty, and perhaps with parts of ourselves that are too often overlooked in the rush of daily life.

Whether visitors come to discover a new artist, find a work that speaks to a cherished memory, or simply enjoy a moment of quiet reflection, Outside In offers an experience that feels both deeply personal and universally human.
