Rare Earth

Wide flat and dry
With no ice
As had been the case
Most of a treacherous winter
Worst in memory
Now mid June
Somewhat better
Weather that is
Not that it matters
My friend died
While in rehab
We spoke most days
So many adventures
Farmer and musician
Grew reefer and onions
Turned me on to the blues
Jim was my mentor
Politics, economy, environment
In simple terms
Explained what I didn’t know
During Vietnam
We watched Walter Cronkite
And that’s the way it is
History unfolding nightly
Black and white on CBS
When war seemed so real
Today another died
Architect Graham Gund
Three days younger than me
Knew him but not well
The eighty-four club
Graham, Jane, Steve and Peggy
Clinging to the cliff
Rock climbing freestyle
Critic Fast Eddy died today
Last week Sly and Brian
Pet sounds of an era
Help, help me Rhonda
When we were immortal
Yesterday Robert reminded me
They’re shooting in the ranks
Where air is rare
Harder to breathe
Let there be release
