Arlo & Family Headline the Green River Festival
On Woody’s Centennial Birthday: July 14 & 15
By: David Wilson - Jul 09, 2012
I cannot but imagine that the competition for the Guthrie Family’s appearance on the actual day of Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday must have been fierce. Fortunate are we that on that day, this coming weekend, July 14th and 15th they will headline the Green River Festival in Greenfield, MA.
Granddaughter Sarah Lee with husband Johnny Irion will grace two of the three stages on Saturday afternoon, the Main stage at 12:40 and the Meltdown stage at 3:40, and then join Arlo and the rest of the Guthrie Family reunion for the evening show at 8:45.
As if that alone were not enough reason to attend this festival, also scheduled for the Saturday sessions are Boston’s 2010 Americana Artist of the Year, David Wax Museum, the down home harmonies of the Sweetback Sisters, the Sun Parade and a near dozen more first rate musicians in a wide variety of genres.
Sunday gets even better. Chris Smither is joined by his rarely seen backup band, The Motivators. The legend himself, Martin Simpson an incomparable guitarist born of but not limited by the Celtic tradition, Fairport Convention alumnus, Richard Thompson, Clifton Chenier’s kid, CJ, pushing the boundaries of zydeco and Peter Mulvey fronting the Crumbling Beauties are just a few of the dozen and a half Sunday I-wanna-sees. Oh, yes, must not forget Darlingside, local newbie phenoms, been dying to catch them live ever since I heard their EP. Also… well, just too many…
