After the Rain
No Man's Land

After the Rain
Sticking my head up
From the crater
We leaped into
Yesterday during
The thick of it
Scorched earth
Barren landscape
Forrest reduced to splinters
Stark and beautiful
Against moody sky
Acrid air
Burning our lungs
Looking about
Signs of life
From under you said
I’m hungry
Perhaps a carrot
Foraging in the muck
Now what you asked
What’s to be done
Are we alone
Will it happen again
Crawling out
Bent with pain
No broken bones
Pulling you along
Where are we going
You asked plaintively
Not really sure
Wish I could be reassuring
Let’s just move on
No point staying here
Perhaps we’ll find food
Get in out of rain
Abandoned homes
In village ahead
From there to
Start over
Tomorrow is
Another day
Somewhere children play
