Hic Transit Dracones
Up the River for Kurtz

Hic Transit Dracones
We all have a tale to tell
Some more embellished
Than others
While in my 20s
Typed out my life
In chapters
What did I know
Archived and forgotten
In a box
Too painful and juvenile
Ever to revisit
This past year
Decades on
Some fifty or so
Christ how daunting
Returning to the theme
Harvesting the
Low hanging fruit
Of deranged memory
Now bound into
Tidy volumes
To sit upon shelves
Shards indeed
And surely total gonzo
More daunting
Now what
Have the stories been told
All these years
Grinding around in the belly
Inner beast of being
The ones yet hidden
Hic transit dracones
Fear of falling off the edge
Like medieval sailors
Seeking new land
Now too ancient
For exotic adventures
Other than in the imagination
Another vast terrain
Crying out for
Explorers
Or survivors
That place from which
No traveler returns
