July 31 – September 4, 2021

HallSpace is pleased to present monotypes and shaped, multi-panel paintings by Rob Roy in "Dispatches from America."

Roy prints on offset printed matter, using the the preprinted images from brochures and paint color samples as backgrounds for his monotypes. By layering iconic graphic images over printed ephemera, Roy's repurposing of materials adds to the transformation of meaning. In his series of silhouetted animal icons, "Bestiary," we see animals as reference, perhaps memories.

Roy touches on many topics in his work. He is careful to avoid conclusions, instead inviting the viewer to interpret meaning. Roy writes, " I make work that responds to images and events that span both American and world history. This way of looking started in my childhood, and has continued into the present. I look at my use of subject matter (often current events, war, terrorism, conflict, religion, danger, science, sports, culture, capitalism, and global1zation) as an open system, and in constant flux. It is also an opportunity to consider what has been lost, and what continues to resonate. It is also an opportunity to evaluate the relevance of what endures."
