Fragments of martyrs
Slaughtered in such
Gruesome and varied ways
Broken on the wheel
Stretched on the rack
Burned at the stake
The lucky ones
Hanged or beheaded
Hacked up with chainsaws
Mafia style
Like the neighbor
Begging for forgiveness
Who ran over Gotti’s kid
An accident pure and simple
Unforgiven by the Dapper Don
How does all that
Misfortune relate to us
Praying to the saints
Pilgrimages to churches
Votive offerings
Cluttering altars
Crutches and canes
Souvenirs of cures
Saved by miracles
The bad luck
Of all those saints
When heaven knows
Day to day
The little wonders
Of getting through life
Is nothing short of
Truly miraculous
