Hurricane

Hurricane
Batten down the hatches
Furl the sails
Put out the sea anchor
It’s gonnah blow
Fill the bathtub
Tape the windows
That’s what we did
Decades ago
Labor Day in Annisquam
Boats hauled up
Sent to the market
Emergency supplies
Spotted a woman
Cart piled high
Frozen food
Lots of ice cream
Tapped her shoulder
Hey lady
Hope you don’t
Mind me asking but
Whatcha gonah do
When the power
Goes out
Could be for days
She freaked
Seeing the absurdity
Of her folly
Frenzied she asked
What should I get
Nicely replied
Water, batteries, candles
Essentials like that
What I was there for
In a panic
She abandoned the cart
Got another
Racing like a banshee
Back home with stuff
Put on a slicker
Walked down to
Lighthouse Beach
Wind was wippin’ fierce
Scampering over the rocks
It’s only weather
