Joanna Klain and Richard Criddle at Eclipse Gallery

Multi-Media Works

By: - Sep 18, 2024

“Some Assembly Required”, an exhibit of multi-media works by Joanna Klain and Richard Criddle. On view at the Eclipse Mill Gallery 10/1 through 10/30/24, Thursday through Sundays, noon to 6 pm. Reception Saturday, 10/6, 4 to 7pm. Artists shared talks Saturday, 10/16, 3pm.

Klain uses archival papers which have been drawn-on, stenciled pigment printed, crushed and/or painted. These are applied in this show to canvas. Criddle makes sculptures from metal and found objects. The two artists met early last spring at the closing of an art exhibit in North Adams. Richard was removing several pieces of his work. When Joanna spied these sculptures she saw works that resonated with her own images. She invited Richard on the spot to exhibit with her in October at the Eclipse Mill Gallery.

Both artists have their own extensive exhibition histories. Both have in recent years have become more playful and experimental in their independent approaches. Synchronicity exists between their recent work. Each separately builds and composes imaginary imagery that reflect interior preoccupations with the mysterious and the mischievous.

Richard Criddle is a British sculptor who moved to New England in 1996. He now lives and works in southern Vermont. He received a BA degree in fine arts sculpture from the Central School of Art and Design, London, graduating onto The Royal College of Art to study bronze casting. He then completed a 3-year post graduate diploma at the Royal Academy Schools funded by the Henry Moore Foundation. Richard was formerly the Director of Fabrication and Art Installation at MASS MoCA ( 1999-2021). Joanna Klain received a BFA in Printmaking from Ohio University. Joanna has a long history making original intaglio prints which have been exhibited nationally and in venues in Australia and the Czech Republic. Klain is past president of The American Color Print Society and remains a member of the Society of American Graphic Arts (SAGA). Since her move to North Adams she has focused on making collage on paper and multi-media images on canvas.
