Beach Detritus
Walking the Tide Line

Beach Detritus
Soft rain
Mid October
First morning
Week on the Cape
Walking the beach
Deserted and dreary
Tourists long gone
End of frenzy
Alone with the sea
Along the tide line
Mix of weeds
Scrabbled detritus
First one then another
Lots of them
Genocide of horseshoe crabs
Ancient warriors of the deep
Old as dinosaurs
Odd creatures
Underwater armor
Crawling on the bottom
That single lance
Unicorns it seems
Spears for predators
Washed up in droves
A mass killing
Mixed in with snails
Covered with barnacles
Clumped in clusters
Wondered what ailed them
Taking snapshots
Documenting this
Walk on the sand
Considering the
Cruelty of nature
Likely man made
Ending the war
On coal
