Laundry Day

Laundry Day

Down Maine
Monday in Waldaboro
Breakfast at Moody's
Headed on out
Back road to Whitefield
Two lane blacktop
Bout a half hour
As the crow flies
Drove in the rain
Dreary steady drizzle
Ann and Jim Silin
College buddy
Been some 35 years
Their wedding day
Since eyeballin'
Much to catch up on
Nearly there when
Sign for eggs, pies
Baskets and quilts
Astrid collects baskets
I hankered a nice quilt
Pulled in just
Minutes from Jim’s place
Only come this way once
There was wet laundry
Hangin’ on the line
Curious site nowadays
Things what they is
No chance of dryin'
Such a damp day
Roamed around a bit
For signs of life
A buggy out back
Peered in window
Saw the baskets
Knocked on door
Dog came out
Took a look
Sniffed us good but
Didn’t bark
We drove on
Them’s the Amish folks
Jim said several families
Live hereabouts
No electricity but
Some got it in the shop
Real nice quilts
Seems Monday is
Laundry day
Come rain or shine
Lord knows why
Has His ways about
Doing the chores
Good neighbors
Decent folks
Keep to themselves
Know what I mean
