Into the Woods

Into the Woods
Brandeis
Freshman Year
Only one work in
Annual student show
Plucked from sketch book
Sepia ink on paper
Abstracted image
That day in a rage
Into the woods with
Wine and model
Paper and paint
The legendary
Rachel Goldstein
Soul on ice
Jewess from Georgia
Sing-song drawl
Kept kosher off campus
Meat in the sink
Dairy in bathtub
I had a car
Over-and-over
Relentless moan
Siren song
Take me to Cambridge
Please oh please
Joan Baez at Club 47
Fueled by wine and wench
Plein air painter
Mucking about
The hilarity of it
Lurid poses
Savage Messiah
Ever more sloshed
Dashed off portraits
Slashing swatches
deKooning’s women
We fell to the ground
Custard’s last stand
Paintings were brilliant
At least in the moment
So much better than
Crap in the show
When later sober
Sad to say
Clear light of day
Not all that great|
Now decades on
Flagrant folly
In vino veritas
Essence of art
From then to now
Many such delusions
Brilliant corners
Now dulled by time
