Southeast Florida Theater Companies Present Diverse Offerings
By: Aaron Krause - Jan 21, 2021
Theatre Lab, Florida Atlantic University’s professional resident company, will virtually present a reading of a new play every 21 days through May as part of its “New Plays for the New Year” festival.
And to kick off the series, Theatre Lab will feature a double-header. First, at 5 p.m. EST on Friday, Jan. 22, the company’s popular “An Afternoon of Short Plays” will take the virtual stage. Theatre Lab staff selected the pieces from submissions by participants in October’s Playwright’s MasterClass series.
“Join us as we continue our tradition of developing and presenting the work of established and emerging playwrights from our very own community,” reads an announcement on https://www.fau.edu/artsandletters/theatrelab.
Following “An Afternoon of Short Plays,” Theatre Lab will present a reading of Last Night in Inwood by Alix Sobler at 7 p.m. EST. In the piece, “a major disaster in Manhattan has everyone on the island looking for high ground,” reads a synopsis. “For Danny’s family and friends, that higher ground happens to be her one-bedroom apartment in Inwood. As the world outside goes to pieces, Danny tries to keep the peace among the assorted characters gathered in her space. They might make it through this crisis, if they can manage to survive each other.”
A talkback with the audience and artists will follow each play reading. The time and dates for them are 7 p.m. EST on Fridays, Feb. 12, March 5, March 26, April 16, and May 7.

Meanwhile, it’s perfectly safe to travel around the world. That is, if you do so through Long Distance Affair, which Miami’s Juggerknot Theatre Company and the international-based PopUP Theatrics have arranged.
Specifically, the companies invite you to book your “flight” to Lagos, Mumbai, Portland-Oregon, Beirut, Los Angeles, and Mexico City.
Long Distance Travel, scheduled this year from Feb. 11-21, features monologues which actors perform from home live in different cities.
“Eighteen theater artists from six cities around the world have united to create this one-of-a-kind virtual adventure just for you,” reads a synopsis. “In these intimate 10-minute theatrical encounters, audiences anywhere can drop in from their own homes, to three or all six cities. Each performance is for you. Travel with a small group of other passengers who will join you on your trip from all over the world.
“Someone across the globe is reaching out just for you. So, “what will be the result when you and a perfect stranger meet with only a computer screen between you? Make possible an impossible trip.”
Juggerknot Theatre Company and PopUP Theatrics offered Long Distance Travel last May. And if that series was any indication, the monologues could vary from touching to zany.
