3 Summers of Lincoln Soars
By: Sharon Eubanks - Mar 24, 2025
3 Summers of Lincoln is a captivating production blending historical and contemporary dance and music to explore the meetings between Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass during the American Civil War. Set across three summers—1862, 1863, and 1864—the play dramatizes Lincoln's leadership struggle and Douglass’ unwavering commitment to abolition.
In 1862, two years into the war, Lincoln (Ivan Hernandez) faces the frustrating indecision of his general, George McClellan (Eric Anderson), and his divided cabinet. While McClellan dithers, Lincoln knows the war is ultimately about slavery. Douglass (Quentin Earl Darrington), in contrast, is resolute, believing the Union's cause must be the abolition of slavery.
The moral compass of the story is carried by Elizabeth (Saycon Sengbloh) and William (John-Andrew Morrison), both Black characters, as well as Private Putnam (Nathan Salstone), a young white Union soldier. Their perspectives help guide Lincoln’s evolving understanding and decision-making over the course of the war.
Choreographed by John Rua and Daniel J. Watts, with a score by Crystal Monee Hall, the production uses tap, hip-hop, and live music to create a dynamic and emotional experience. The set design, featuring haunting Civil War imagery, complements the powerful performances on stage.
Written by Joe Pietro and directed by Christopher Ashley, 3 Summers of Lincoln offers a poignant exploration of the moral and political struggles of the Civil War, while resonating with contemporary issues of race and freedom.
