Gloucester, MA – Inspired by the light and wonder of fireflies, 16 Boston Sculptors Gallery artists have been invited to exhibit their site-specific sculptural works on the grounds of the Manship Artists Residency + Studios (MARS) in Gloucester, MA. On display September 25 through October 24, Boston Sculptors: ALight on MARS embraces a diverse range of media, featuring glowing, twinkling, light-emitting works populating the lawns, afloat in the quarry waters, and amidst the trees. Exhibiting Artists: Chris Abrams, Adria Arch/Kathleen Volp, Jodie Colella, Murray Dewart, Christopher Frost, Mags Harries, Michelle Lougee, Claudia Olds Goldie, Ellen Schon, Nancy Selvage, Jessica Straus, Marilu Swett, Kenson Truong, Leslie Wilcox, Christina Zwart.
Paul Manship, celebrated sculptor of the Prometheus Fountain in New York City’s Rockefeller Center, established his summer residence and studio amid Cape Ann’s granite quarries.
Fascinated by the fireflies that lit up the meadows at night, Manship named this enchanting property “Starfield” in their honor, delighting in his ability to walk through the virtual field of stars they created.
My piece, Gathered Glow, a group of lanterns inspired by these luminous beetles, is made of translucent 3D printed porcelain with solar lights. The lanterns hang from a tree branch overlooking a beautiful quarry onsite at Starfield.
During the day, the porcelain lanterns appear opaque white. In the evening, they emanate soft gold lights in the darkness, metaphors of hope for a restored world.
