Margaret Swan’s Lift, on view December 9th to January 24th, features a new body of work exploring forces of nature in relation to structures that harness their power. Inspired by the rigging of sailing vessels, Swan’s large wall-mounted and freestanding sculptures position the taut interplay of linear elements in contrast to curving planes in space, suggesting the presence of wind animating the work.

The constructed aluminum surfaces are painted and roughly sanded creating linear patterns following the contour of the curving sheets. After sanding, the scratched surfaces are stained with a contrasting pigment, generating luminous variations of color over the patterned texture of the variously exposed and coated aluminum. The expansive painterly quality of the curving planes complement the geometric configuration of supporting linear elements to create dynamic, yet interconnected, opposites.

Awarded a New England Foundation for the Arts Regional Fellowship in Sculpture, a Massachusetts Artist Fellowship in Sculpture, and other grants during her career, Swan is a graduate of Bennington College and Syracuse University. Her sculpture has been featured in museum exhibitions throughout New England, including the Aldrich Museum, the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston.

Margaret Swan: Lift runs concurrently with Larry Pollans: FOREST.
