Biennial Prilla Smith Brackett Award
Davis Museum at Wellesley College
By: - Apr 02nd, 2024The Davis Museum at Wellesley College is proud to announce the third iteration of the biennial Prilla Smith Brackett Award. This biennial award honors an outstanding female-identifying visual artist based in the Greater Boston area. Funded by Prilla Smith Brackett (Wellesley Class of 1964) and administered by the Davis Museum at Wellesley College, the Brackett Award will be given to the artist whose work demonstrates extraordinary artistic vision, talent, and skill. The award winner will be announced in Fall 2024.

Yinka Shonibare CBE: Suspended States

Suspended States is the artist’s first London solo exhibition in over 20 years. It showcases new works, interrogating how systems of power affect sites of refuge, debates on public statues, the ecological impact of colonialisation and the legacy of imperialism on conflict and consequential attempts at peace.

Dali Museum in St. Petersburgh, Florida
Celebrating 100 Years of Surrealism
By: - Apr 17th, 2024Arguably, Dali's best known work and masterpiece is “The Persistence of Memory” 1931. It was included in his first New York exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in 1932. In 1934 it was anonymously donated to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). It has been suggested that it was influenced by Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity. To which the artist replied that the soft watches were not inspired by the theory of relativity, but by the surrealist perception of a Camembert melting in the sun.

By: - Apr 19th, 2024The exhibition title temporary arrangements refers to Mary Lum’s journeys though the streets of New York and Paris, observing the fragments of a crumbling façade of a building, a vendor’s pushcart, or a poster for a vernissage, which may have a short shelf life in the urban environment. Lum takes photographs on the streets looking at geometric forms, planes of color, and text.

Pollock's Masterpiece Lavender Mist
How It Got Away From the MFA
By: - May 05th, 2024For under a million dollars, MFA curator Kenworth Moffett, presented Jackson Pollock's Lavender Mist to the acquisitions committee. In an epic pratfall the trustees under orders from the new director, Merrill Rueppel, turned it down. In a matter of weeks it was acquired by the National Gallery. The MFA later acquired two works by the abstract expressionist artist. Several years ago a Pollock, now owned by the Norton Museum, sold for $200 million.

She was part of the Studio Coalition which mounted the nation's first Open Studios. She was the first new Boston artist selected for the Whitney Annual. Until the tide changed she was among the most admired abstract artists of her generation.
