By: - Apr 16th, 2015The contract with Milliken University was due to arrive when Kate Maguire called and asked Tony Simotes to meet for breakfast. Tony Simotes Conflates Classical and Contemporary Theatre
Move from S&Co. to Berkshire Theatre Group
By: - Apr 15th, 2015Tony Simotes was summarily ousted from Shakespeare & Company when he got on the wrong side with a micro managing now former board president Sarah Hancock. Significantly, she is a close friend of founding artistic director, Tina Packer, whose vision of the company was very different from Simotes who replaced her. Rick Dildine who was brought in with a mandate for change soon realized the chain of command and hastily departed. In a matter of months the company went from plan B to plan C. When we met with Simotes for a long lunch he was not inclined to sort out those loose ends. He is upbeat about new possibilities as second in command to Kate Maguire and the richly enhanced Berkshire Theatre Group.

A Hatful of Rain at Berkshire Theatre Group Theatre
Once Provocative Play Is Rarely Revived
By: - Aug 20th, 2014While the play has relevance to today’s veterans dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, and sometimes resulting addictions, the material is dated. Too much information has been spread about war, its effects on families and society, to make these characters’ shock seem real.

Sondheim's A Little Night Music at Colonial Music
Enchanting Production from Berkshire Theatre Group
By: - Jul 09th, 2014Not surprisingly the richly dark and complez A Little Night Music by the always challenging and insightful Stephen Sondheim is performed by opera companies. Berkshire Theatre Group is commended for having mounted a production with an amazing cast and superb orchestra. This otherwise fabulous musical, however, has been undermined by cutting corners on a second rate set. That hardly matters, however, with chills up the spine when Maureen O'Flynn sings the riveting and iconic "Send in the Clowns."

Dialogue With Clarence Fanto One Opinion
Former Managing Editor of the Berkshire Eagle
By: - Oct 05th, 2013In 1987 Clarence Fanto moved full time to the Berkshires joining the Berkshire Eagle as editor of its then new Sunday edition. He left the paper as its managing editor and several years ago rejoined as a reporter and has now slowed down as a freelancer and columnist. For the past several years he has compiled an annual summary of budgets, attendance and box office revenues of the major Berkshire arts organizations. We got together for lunch to connect the dots. There is no dispute over the accuracy of the data he compiles but we differ on its interpretation. Our occasional meetings and e mails are always lively and this is a chance to listen in.

Berkshire Theatre Highlights 2013 Theatre
Reflecting on an Intense High Season
By: - Sep 09th, 2013With several major Berkshire arts organizations now closed until next year it's time to reflect on the intense and often remarkable 2013 high season. It's impossible to be everywhere, often with conflicts on any given night, but we offer highlights of what we managed to review. In addition to the Berkshires we covered five new plays at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The busy season included a number of interviews with artistic directors, actors and playwrights.

Shakespeare & Company Beauty Queens Two Theatre
Risk Taking Based on a 35 Year Legacy
By: - Sep 02nd, 2013There has been considerable risk taking in the 2013 season programmed by Shakespeare & Company artistic director Tony Simotes. It has combined rarely produced Shakespeare plays as well as tough works by Stoppard and Brecht. The season ends on September 15 with arguably the most controversial play of the Berkshire season Martin McDonagh's brutal dark comedy The Beauty Queen of Leenane. This is part two of a discussion with its cast members Tina Packer, Elizabeth Aspenlieder, David Sedgwick and Edmund Donovan.

Anna Christie at Berkshire Theatre Group Theatre
O’Neill Play Washes Up in Stockbridge
By: - Aug 30th, 2013The Berkshire Theatre Group production of Eugene O'Neill's 1921 play Anna Christie has been given an extreme makeover by Pulitzer prize winning director David Auburn. The play has been condensed from four acts to two with the cast cut from ten to five characters. With these drastic reductions, while clear and cohesive, Auburn serves the steak without the sizzle.
