Publisher & Editor. Charles was the director of exhibitions for the New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University where he taught art history and the humanities. He taugh tModern Art and the Avant-garde for Metropolitan College of Boston University. After many years as a contributor, columnist and editor for a range of print publications from Art New England, Art News, the Boston Phoenix, the Boston Herald Traveler and Patriot Ledger, to mention a few, he went on line with Maverick Arts which evolved into a website.

Not since Wilco have we seen such raw energy rock the Shed. It was great fun. The band informed the audience that they would like to be an annual event like James Taylor. What a great idea.

Today Williamstown Theatre Festival sent out an e mail blast with raves from unattributed sources. The majority of Berkshire theatre critics were less than thrilled by the world premiere of Touch(ed) by Bess Wohl. But, hey, who cares what critics think?

Danner will perform with pianist Mike Renzi and bassist Neal Miner. Judy Carmichael’s “Jazz Inspired†will be taped before a live audience at Seiji Ozawa Hall on Saturday, September 3, at 2 pm, and broadcast at a later date on 170 stations in the United States and worldwide.

He squirmed and refused to answer the question. As we have previously reported the museum is now in the process of creating another long term installation similar to the enormously successful building devoted to the late Sol LeWitt. It greatly strengthens North Adams as a global art world destination.

The phenomenal program combined the most demanding and precise classical ballet with goofy comedic segments of mime. It kept the audience guessing until it burst into a standing ovation that seemed to go on forever. It was a stunning and galvanic evening of dance.

Nikos Stage of Williamstown Theatre Festival

Based on this second production at Williamstown Theatre Festival it is still a work in progress needing an extreme makeover. Don't expect to see this ersatz comedy about mental illness to reach Off Broadway any time soon.

Day Long Annual Family Event
By: - Aug 03rd, 2011Glorious summer weather resulted in a near capacity turnout in the Shed and on the lawn for one of the most popular programs of the season. The gates opened at 2 PM as families flocked to the Lenox estate for the annual Tanglewood on Parade. The evening program featuring four guest conductors and an accessible program culminated with blasting canons and bursting fireworks climaxing a massive rendering of Tchaikovsky's anthem The 1812 Overture. It was an occasion to rethink our damaged and endangered notions of patriotism and sacrifice.

If attendance is down, that’s okay cause Bang On A Can isn’t banking on an audience to succeed. It may be a festival but it’s also an Institute and that means money generated by ticket sales is pretty much beside the point. Ticket sales to Bang On A Can are like subscriptions to newspapers or magazines, they don’t pay the bills, rather they provide a more-or-less accurate measure of public reception.

Mark St. Germain Play Returns in October

It went on to Off Broadway where it has now passed 300 performances and is poised for a national and international tour. Now a new play by St. Germain has set a record for most tickets on the Main Stage for a drama. From July 21 through August 6 there were some 7,000 tickets sold.

The cerebral music and sardonic lyrics were just what the doctor ordered for cash strapped Tanglewood which is loosening up to allow the vulgarians into the tample of the hallowed grounds of the BSO in Lenox. Awesome. A good time was had by all and nothing was trashed.

In performances at Jacob's Pillow we were provided with an overview from the first Philip Glass music to be set to music North Star, from 1978, to a piece from the past year based on the modal jazz classic My Favorite Things by the John Coltrane Quartet. It was a sensual and evocative evening of modernist classicism. The company often evoked visual beauty, harmony, and an exuding joy of creative dance.

In her first season as artistic director, Jenny Gersten has added reworking classics to the Nikos program with mixed results. The season opener Streetcar Named Desire raised critical eyebrows. The second classic A Doll's House is a bomb that has arrived D.O.A. for a run that, ironically sold out on the lure of the potential of one of Ibsen's most enduring plays. Who knew?
