Tanglewood
Established by Serge Koussevitzky, Tanglewood is the summer home of the BSO. A visit to the beautifully manicured campus is a must for Berkshire visitors. Tickets for the lawn "seats" are affordably priced and are a delightful way to listen to performances while enjoying an elaborate picnic or just a simple glass of wine.

Dialogue With Clarence Fanto One Opinion
Former Managing Editor of the Berkshire Eagle
By: - Oct 05th, 2013In 1987 Clarence Fanto moved full time to the Berkshires joining the Berkshire Eagle as editor of its then new Sunday edition. He left the paper as its managing editor and several years ago rejoined as a reporter and has now slowed down as a freelancer and columnist. For the past several years he has compiled an annual summary of budgets, attendance and box office revenues of the major Berkshire arts organizations. We got together for lunch to connect the dots. There is no dispute over the accuracy of the data he compiles but we differ on its interpretation. Our occasional meetings and e mails are always lively and this is a chance to listen in.

Berkshire Theatre Highlights 2013 Theatre
Reflecting on an Intense High Season
By: - Sep 09th, 2013With several major Berkshire arts organizations now closed until next year it's time to reflect on the intense and often remarkable 2013 high season. It's impossible to be everywhere, often with conflicts on any given night, but we offer highlights of what we managed to review. In addition to the Berkshires we covered five new plays at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The busy season included a number of interviews with artistic directors, actors and playwrights.

Tanglewood Drops the Ball by 9% Opinion
Time to Rethink Mix of Classical and Popular Programming
By: - Sep 04th, 2013For its gala 2012, 75th anniversary Tanglewood logged its third best attendance at 375,776. This year, despite generally favorable weather, attendance declined by 9%. Non classical programming was off by 14% largely attributed to the absence of James Taylor whose three concerts last season sold 54, 385 tickets (minus comps). Even with deep pockets and a broad base of support it has been a year of red ink for Mark Volpe and the BSO. There is no need for panic but it's time to bring in consultants to book non classical programming.

Harry Connick, Jr. at Tanglewood Music
Blustery Last Night in the Shed
By: - Sep 01st, 2013With thunder and lightning it rained cats and dogs for the Shed performance of Harry Connick, Jr. at Tanglewood. We managed to stay sky high and bone dry through the best non classical performance of the season. Connick charmed the audience with the full range of his vast musical talent. He sang several songs from the new CD Every Man Should Know his 30th and 7th that he entirely composed and arranged.

The Smoking Brisket Conspiracy Food
Guilt Free Barbecue in the Berkshires
By: - Aug 10th, 2013On a day off from playing violin at Tanglewood our musician/ chef decided to tackle barbecued brisket for a family gathering. His approach proves to be quite contrarian. He resists trends for fancy equipment and exotic recipes for rubs and sauces. His approach is to just go ahead and do it. Keep the flame low and slow and all else will be just fine.

Now he steps in for Ferruccio Furlanetto to heal the wounds of Andris Nelsons absence at Tanglewood. Bravo Eric Owens.

Spice Dragon in Pittsfield Food
Asian Confusion Food
By: - Jul 15th, 2013With a winning combination of Asian Fusion food, ambiance, and moderate prices Spice Dragon in Pittsfield is a popular destination. Over several visits, however, the food and service has been inconsistent. Busy nights stretch the limits of understaffed and inexperienced front of house and an ability to get food to tables in a timely manner. In Pittsfield, however, there isn't much competition for dining on this level.

MoCA Director Joe Thompson on Wilco Opinion
Debriefing the Third Solid Sound Festival
By: - Jun 29th, 2013On Saturday of the recent, third Wilco Solid Sound Festival at about 7,800 Mass MoCA set a single day attendance record. While it would be possible to sell a few hundred more tickets Mass MoCA director Joe Thompson insists that for the comfort and quality of the event that's just about capacity. With the sale of some 7,200 tickets, about 10% to Berkshire county residents, the event took in but also spent a lot of money. Given ongoing infrastructure development and expenses Thompson said that the museum will be close to breaking even or making a little after the final tally. But it's a ton of work.
