Established by Serge Koussevitzky, Tanglewood is the summer home of the BSO. A visit to the beautifully manicured campus is a must for Berkshire visitors. Tickets for the lawn "seats" are affordably priced and are a delightful way to listen to performances while enjoying an elaborate picnic or just a simple glass of wine.

Five conductors and numerous guest artists presented a two hour program that featured his music as well as composers like Copland, a close friend, and Mahler, a kindred spirit. John Williams composed a special piece for the occasion. It was a night to remember as a chapter of Tanglewood's vivid history.

The packed house and crowded lawn were recipients of a night of comedic opera, performed by The Knights with special guests. Skits jammed in-between tenor and soprano leads. The mockery led the way to this dumbfounded comedy, which reminds one of the Marx Brothers.

The dance was performed in collaboration with Boston Ballet.

Asked if it is time to retire he replied with the title of his memoir "What and Quit Show Biz." It's a work in progress with Dick Vacca. They hope to publish the book in spring, 2019. With typical wit and insight it recaps a career booking clubs like Jazz Workshop/ Paul's Mall, and Sculler's. He founded the Tanglewood Jazz Festival and produced concerts at Symphony Hall and other venues.

That breakup resulted in "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" the hit of the debut album of Crosby Stills and Nash. Not long ago they were booked for an AARP event. That chance encounter resulted in a tour that touched down at Tanglewood. On September 22 they will release a studio album "For What It's Earth" titled for a Leonard Cohen song.

With manufacturing long gone from the region cultural tourism is the major industry. The arts season attracts more than 400,000 visitors and generates 4,000 plus jobs. Congressman Richard Neal announced $348,000 in NEA funding for the Berkshires. The federal funding cycle provides $900,700 to the Massachusetts Cultural Council and $1,092,400 to the New England Foundation for the Arts to benefit cultural groups across the state. He reported that the NEA this year got an increase of $3 million for a total of $152,849,000.

The Boston Symphony, Tanglewood chorus and thrilling soloists brought Berlioz safely to heaven and hell.

Pete Townsend’s Rock Opera

It was performed to mostly favorable but mixed reviews with the 90-piece Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the 80 members of the London Oriana Choir. This version was performed last night at Tanglewood with Keith Lockhart conducting the Boston Pops. Opera tenor Alfie Boe, Townsend, and British rocker Billy Idol performed the vocals.
